Part 3 of the water detection series in Google Earth Engine.
In this video, we go beyond NDWI and build a highly accurate water mask using DSWE — Dynamic Surface Water Extent.
DSWE uses multiple spectral indicators to classify water more reliably:
• NDWI (Green–NIR)
• MNDWI (Green–SWIR1)
• NDMI (NIR–SWIR1)
• NIR absorption
• SWIR1 reflectance
• SWIR2 dark-water detection
This method outperforms simple NDWI thresholding and works extremely well in:
• urban areas
• deep and dark water
• building shadows
• wetlands
• mixed pixels
• rivers with vegetation
📌 Series Structure
• Part 1 — Cloud-free Sentinel-2 composite
• Part 2 — NDWI basic water extraction
• Part 3 — DSWE advanced water mask (this video)
📄 Code Availability
All code blocks for NDWI and DSWE are placed in the description of Part 2 to keep the entire series clean and consistent.
