The authors of this paper warn about a problem called the Plausibility Trap, which happens when people use powerful Artificial Intelligence models to do simple tasks that require exact answers, like reading text from a photo or checking basic facts. While using a chatbot might feel convenient, the researchers found that it is actually much slower and wastes significantly more computing power than using standard tools designed for those specific jobs. Furthermore, relying on these AI models can be dangerous because they are programmed to sound convincing and polite rather than truthful, often agreeing with false information just to satisfy the user. This over-reliance creates a risk where students stop learning how to think for themselves, so the authors suggest a new approach called Tool Selection Engineering to teach people exactly when they should use AI and, more importantly, when they should avoid it.
