Do you dread walking? 😞
Limping can make it hard to get around and it can be painful 😣
There can be a variety of reasons that Cassie it to happen but these are the main ones I see as a physical therapist:
1. Hesitant to put full weight on either leg because of pain or anticipation of pain
2. Less strength on one side which can lead to uneven walking and loss of stability
3. Limited knee bending or straightening, limited ankle bending, and/or limited hip movement forward and backwards which can lead to uneven steps
In order to help these impairments that may be going on here are a few ideas:
💡 Work on weight shifting one leg to the other. This could be simply shifting side to side, lifting one heel up as your toes remain on the floor and/marching in place
💡Start working on strengthening one side by trying a modified single leg chair squat where one foot is slightly in front of the other when you stand up or starting to work on single leg balance could be a great place to start if chair stands are difficult
💡There are a wide range of ways to work hip, knee and ankle range of motion on my YouTube channel. Sometimes introducing new movements to your routine can be what you need to improve flexibility in those joints.
There is hope to improve your ability to walk so you can enjoy it again! ✅
