WE BUILT A PASSTHROUGH! | Our DIY Uhaul Box Truck Conversion and VanLife Build

A challenge with using a box truck as a #vanlife camper is that the box in the back and the cab are generally not directly connected. There is a large wall separating the cab from the back, but we want to be able to easily access the back of the uhaul box truck while we are living van life out on the road. Therefore, we decided to cut a pass through from the box to the cab in order to have access to this goal. However, there are three of us traveling in the box truck, so we need to keep the middle seat in up front. This required us to do surgery on the middle seat and modify it so that we could use it as a seat while also using the pass through to get to the back of the truck.

Another large issue that we faced was that our cab wasn’t flush with the back of our truck. Nearly all of the box truck conversions that we saw on YouTube and blogs had the cab flush with the back of the truck. This made it possible for other people who were converting box trucks to just cut one rectangle of one wall and then be done. However, for us, we had to cut the wall twice and then connect the two sides with a flexible material. We chose to use Accordion Boot Rubber (linked here: https://amzn.to/30udOJF) as it is used commercially for similar applications.

Our seat modification was a unique part of the project that we completely came up with on our own. We’re not totally sure that it is going to work as a permanent solution, but it is a good start and proof of concept. We’re happy to have a unique project like this in our van!

This project was extremely satisfying for us. We loved doing it, and it looks so good to see it completed. Our u-haul box truck conversion is really coming along now! We feel super happy with the progress even though it’s going slowly. Seeing progress like this makes our van conversion feel real and makes us super excited to go travel around in the van. We are stoked!
