This game from the Reykjavik Open 1986 shows Mikhail Tal winning not through a flashy early sacrifice, but through steady pressure, active piece play, and accurate rook coordination in the late middlegame and endgame.
Out of the Najdorf Sicilian, both sides developed actively, and the position quickly became sharp after opposite-side castling. Tal accepted structural weaknesses in exchange for activity, allowing open lines on the kingside and central files. The middlegame featured multiple rook exchanges and a transition into an unbalanced position where Black’s king remained active while White’s coordination slowly deteriorated.
The critical phase came after Tal activated his rooks and king, gradually pushing White into a passive defensive setup. White’s pieces became disconnected, especially after the advance of Black’s f-pawn, which restricted the king and opened decisive lines.
The game concludes with precise rook placement, culminating in 37…Rd1#, a straightforward but instructive checkmate that highlights the power of open files, king activity, and coordination rather than speculative tactics.
This game is a clear example of how Tal could win technically, even without spectacular sacrifices.
