Hot Flushes. So what is menopause? Menopause is the cessation of menstruation in women. We say that a woman has attained menopause when she has not had menstruation in the last 12 months. One of the common symptoms of menopause is hot flushes. So what are hot flushes? A woman feels hot, her face gets red, and she is sweaty. And when this occurs in the night, it is called night sweats. Now these usually are episodic. They last for a few minutes. It's as if a woman has been exercising for a minute. They can be mild to moderate, or, in some patients, very severe. They can be frequent. They can be infrequent. It is variable in different people. Some people may have 20 hot flushes in a day, and it is important for a woman to contact her gynaecologist when she notices hot flushes. So what is the evaluation of hot flushes? So why does it occur? Hot flushes occur because of the reduced oestrogen, which has an effect on thermoregulation. The management wise, management involves one is lifestyle modification, which we call alternative treatment, no treatment or hormone replacement therapy. When there are mild to moderate hot flushes and when a woman is educated about them, she may not require any treatment at home. Through some women or most women, they try to take alternate treatment. The alternate treatment involves regular exercise like walking, yoga and meditation. Three is reducing the intake of caffeine and alcohol, which also reduces hot flushes and night sweats. Next, the intake of isoflavonoids. Isoflavents are soya products. Now these release plant oestrogen. Now these also help to cope with hot flushes and night sweats. Now, when women have severe hot flushes, they would require hormone replacement therapy or HRT. So a doctor would evaluate whether there is a need for HRT. He will explain to you about the pros, cons, risks, and benefits of HRT before starting and also evaluate the type of HRT that is required. Now the side effects of hormone replacement therapy are that it slightly increases the risk of breast cancer, stroke and blood clots. So do not take HRT on your own; consult your gynaecologist before taking HRT.
