We Visited the BIRTHPLACE of Portugal’s Most Famous Pastry 🇵🇹

🇵🇹 Welcome back everyone — today we visit the ORIGINAL home of the Portuguese custard tart! 🇵🇹

Behind us is Pastéis de Belém, the legendary spot where the true pastéis have been handmade since the 1830s. This isn’t just a bakery — it’s a living piece of history. And like Champagne in France, you cannot call it a “Pastel de Belém” unless it’s made right here in this district of Lisbon. Everywhere else… it’s a pastel de nata.

From the moment we walked in, it felt like stepping a century back in time. Wooden counters, tiled walls, ancient charm everywhere. And today, we even got invited into the back to see the operation:
🔥 25,000 handmade tarts baked every single day
🔥 The original ovens
🔥 Handmade pastry cups
🔥 That iconic caramelised top
🔥 A recipe passed down from monks nearly 200 years ago

Joined again by our good friend Chris from Crown & Bezel, we soaked up the history, explored the labyrinth of counters and corridors, and finally dusted our fresh tarts with cinnamon — the proper way.

And the verdict?
Crisp. Chewy. Warm. Creamy.
Quite possibly the best sweet treat in the world.
