In a series my visiting different faith community in London I made my way to west of London to Southall which is called little India or little Punjab.
Southall, in West London, has one of the largest and most vibrant Sikh communities outside of India. The area is often called "Little Punjab" because of its strong Punjabi and Sikh identity. Many Sikh immigrants settled there from the 1950s onward, primarily from Punjab, India.
Gurdwaras (Sikh Temples)
Sri Guru Singh Sabha Southall: One of the largest gurdwaras in Europe, located on Havelock Road. It serves as a religious, cultural, and community hub.
Gurdwara Ramgarhia Sabha: Another significant place of worship.
Cultural & Economic Influence
Southall Broadway is lined with Punjabi restaurants, Indian sweet shops, and clothing stores catering to the Sikh and Punjabi community.
The area has a strong presence of Sikh-owned businesses, including jewellers, grocery stores, and legal firms.
Festivals & Events
Vaisakhi Nagar Kirtan: One of the biggest Sikh processions in the UK, where thousands of people gather to celebrate the Sikh New Year.
Diwali & Gurpurabs: Celebrated with great enthusiasm.
Community & Social Work
The gurdwaras provide langar (free community meals) to everyone, regardless of background.
Sikh charities and organizations in Southall actively engage in humanitarian work, including food drives and social services.
Political & Social Presence
The Sikh community in Southall has been politically active, advocating for issues affecting Sikhs in the UK and globally.
Many Sikhs from Southall have been involved in local government and activism.
