그러나 고문 사실이 드러나며 전국적인 분노와 시민의 각성으로 이어졌습니다.

그해 6월, 전두환 정권은 국민의 직선제 개헌 요구를 거부하고
노태우를 후계자로 지명하면서 분노는 폭발했습니다.

그리하여 6월 10일, 서울을 비롯한 전국 각지에서 학생과 노동자, 종교인,
시민이 거리로 나와 독재 종식과 민주화를 요구하는 시위를 벌입니다.

6월 항쟁은 결국 직선제 개헌을 이끌어냈고, 대한민국은 군부 독재를 넘어
민주주의 시대로의 전환점을 맞이합니다.

우리가 지금 누리는 권리들은, 바로 이 거리에서 시작되었습니다.

On June 10, 1987, the streets of downtown Seoul resounded with a unified voice:

"Abolish the Constitution! Down with the Dictatorship!"

This day marked the beginning of the June Democratic Uprising,
a turning point in South Korea’s modern democracy.

The military regime led by Chun Doo-hwan had seized power
after the bloody suppression of the Gwangju Uprising seven years earlier,
maintaining authority through an undemocratic indirect election system,
known as the "gymnasium election."

In January 1987, a Seoul National University student
named Park Jong-cheol was tortured to death by police.

The government tried to cover it up, claiming,
“He just dropped dead when we slammed the table.”

But when the truth of the torture was exposed,
it sparked nationwide outrage and public awakening.

That June, the Chun regime rejected growing calls for constitutional reform
and direct presidential elections, instead appointing Roh Tae-woo
as his successor — igniting massive public anger.

As a result, on June 10, citizens — students, workers, religious leaders,
and everyday people — poured into the streets of Seoul and cities
across the country, demanding an end to dictatorship
and a move toward democracy.

The June Democratic Movement eventually led to a constitutional amendment
introducing direct presidential elections, and South Korea began its transition
from military dictatorship to democracy.

The rights and freedoms we enjoy today began on those very streets.

Let us remember that day in June 1987.
Freedom and democracy were never given freely — they were won.
