A stunning little walk in Callander, within the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park.
In the first section we head along a dark atmospheric path in woodland that takes us to the Bracklinn Falls. Many vistors to Callander visit the Falls, and as a consequence it can sometimes feel a little busy with people and dogs.
But if we head further uphill, on the minor road that heads roughly north, we reach an old sign that just says, 'CRAGS', and we delve into another woodland path that takes us up to Callander Craig itself.
Unlike Bracklinn Falls, Callander Craig doesn't see many visitors, and as a consequence we start to get some peace and quiet away from the human hoards. We also start to get pretty awesome views of the land all around; hills and mountains by Glen Artney to the north, Ben Ledi through the mist and low cloud to the west, and glimpses of a land that is so utterly beautiful that it is hardly surprising that places like Callander are so popular with coach-parties of visitors.
Both these locations - Bracklinn Falls and Callander Craig - can be dangerous places if you're not careful. The Falls have sheer rocky drops with slippery surfaces, and the path on top of The Crags occasionally requires some support like a stick or a free hand to keep your feet on steep rocky ground.
This is a walk that aptly demonstrates all that is beautiful about Scotland, and I highly recommend it.
