In this video, we take a look at the Curtiss XP-46, an American fighter from the World War II-era that sought to improve upon the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk design. We first talk about aircraft successors and how they seek to improve upon their predecessors in multiple ways. We then talk about the Spanish Civil War, how it showed some of the future of aerial combat, and how American designers and companies learned from it and their European allies.
We then talk about how Curtiss was influenced and attempted to improve their P-40 design, by making it smaller, more powerful, and with a better armament. We talk about how these improvements had potential downsides, how the plane initially performed in its first flight, and how that initial performance was more of a mirage than anything else. We talk about its actual, somewhat mediocre, flight performance, and how the project ended in failure. We end by talking about what it would have taken for the XP-46 to succeed.
