As I’ve been scrolling on TikTok lately, I’ve noticed a lot of people have been having certain regrets about purchasing a home. It seems to be coming from a variety of demographics, but the data seems to be pointing towards dissatisfaction with buying a home.

REASONS TO RENT
There are some advantages to renting over owning a home. One of the big ones is that you don’t have any unexpected expenses, at least as far as your housing goes. For example, if something breaks, it’s the landlord’s job to fix it. If there is some strange leak or freak accident, you can rest assured it’s not your problem. This is especially useful for people living paycheck to paycheck. Any unexpected bill when you’re on the edge like that can really hurt.

HOMEOWNER EXPERIENCES
So one woman just bought a home. She’s experiencing a variety of issues. There are leaks, floods, broken appliances, and other issues. She has to do this all without having proper furniture in the home. She would have to spend tens of thousands of dollars to fix all of this. The wiring alone was going to cost her $16,000.

GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACY
Another reason not to own a home is due to all the government nonsense you have to deal with. One thing is that you need to have an escrow account set up. This can be a huge pain when the escrow company doesn’t send over your mortgage payment on time. This can be a huge headache. The other issue is increases in property taxes. Any time the county wants, they can assess your home and decide it’s worth more. You can appeal it, but that usually doesn’t do much.
