Rare diseases, such as retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease, often get less attention than bigger-name conditions like uveitis or age-related macular degeneration. HCPLive spoke with Roya Attar, OD, associate professor and director of optometric services at the University of Mississippi Medical Center about recent advancements - and the ground we still have to cover - in treating these rarer diseases.
Attar speaks to the need for pharmaceutical companies to make data more accessible for clinicians and to shift their focus away from common, widespread diseases towards those with no approved treatments.
Additionally, Attar called for clinicians to recommend patients with these rare diseases towards clinical trials, which provide some of the best treatment available.
"When patients get involved in clinical trials, they essentially receive the best care there is," Attar said. "They are checked, they are given certainly the most comprehensive examination of their eyes, as well as multiple forms of imaging, but also monitored for any type of systemic side effects."
