This talk by a mechanical engineering associate professor presents a novel, self-powered blood pressure monitoring concept, inspired by the challenges of providing healthcare in low-resource environments like Haiti. The device converts the mechanical energy from the user's manual inflation of the cuff into electrical power. This is achieved using a piezoelectric cantilever beam inserted into the airflow path. This design aims to meet the principle of "Best Possible Practice" by removing battery dependency and reliably powering the electronic components for pressure sensing and display with a single, un-optimized measurement.
