Former Army Ranger Nicholas Irving revealed why Rangers often fire six or more rounds at a single target in combat. While room-clearing drills used to train soldiers to engage with two shots per enemy, real-world experience overseas showed that wasn’t always effective. Factors like enemy winter clothing and body armor meant that one or two hits with the M4 rifle often didn’t immediately incapacitate adversaries. Irving recounted instances needing five or six rounds to stop someone, emphasizing shot placement and volume to ensure targets went down. He compared this to hunting, where animals rarely drop instantly despite being hit. Irving also discussed the psychological aspects of combat encounters, contrasting the resilience of targets with the cowardice of mass shooters who avoid consequences.
