Day Three of the 2021 UK Hus Bos Challenge Cup and my first real gliding competition.
During a competition, potentially many gliders are returning at the same time so you are expected to land as far up the field as possible (long) to allow for other gliders to land; which is what I did in this video.
Glider pilots will use their experience to judge the landing (reference) point and ground run taking into account the wind speed and direction as well as lift and sink during the circuit and adjust accordingly - we only get one chance to get it right (there is no 'go around' option !!!).
As you can see from the video, most of my attention is outside the cockpit and focusing on the 'picture' outside and making adjustments.
If you've been following my previous videos, the winter panel build was swapping out instruments to make cross country and competition flying much better.
I have the following instruments fitted:
7" OpenVario Glide Computer from SteFLY running XCSoar and remote stick
LX Navigation ERA80 Vario and backup navigation instrument
PowerFLARM with IGC and ADSB Out (anti-collision device for gliders)
57mm Altimeter
Dittel KRT2 8.33Mhz Radio (connected to the OpenVario)
80mm ASI (Air Speed Indicator)
