Wolfe wants nothing to do with churches, priests, or federal crimes. But when his assistant Archie Goodwin descends into the cathedral's medieval undercroft and hears the unmistakable hum of printing presses behind sealed stone walls, even Wolfe's legendary stubbornness cannot resist the puzzle.
What begins as a straightforward counterfeiting investigation quickly spirals into something far more sinister. A wealthy parishioner with a false identity. As the Secret Service closes in and Inspector Cramer demands answers, Wolfe must unravel a web of deception spanning three generations—from a 19th-century fraud that destroyed an immigrant family to a modern conspiracy of revenge, where faith and betrayal echo through stone corridors, and the sins of the fathers are visited upon the cathedral itself.
