Atomic Precision was established in early 2020 by directors Michael Phillips and Wayne Robins, with the aim to supply high precision, accurate, quality yet cost effective prototype and small-batch parts to the scientific research industry.
For a company that has only been in business for 5 years, the rate of growth has been rapid. Having started with a used Hurco VM10 from an auction and in the early days, working out of a shared facility in a barn, Atomic Precision now have a total of 6 Hurco machining centres, including 3 machines with 5 axis configurations. The facility is smart and clean and is based on the outskirts of Oxford within easy reach of the local scientific and research facilities, plus the added bonus that many of the top Formula 1 racing teams can be found nearby.
The directors, Mike and Wayne, previously worked in the scientific research industry and therefore have first-hand knowledge of the exacting tolerances and quick-turnarounds needed. Wayne Robins is keen to emphasise that the service is more than just making parts to order. They offer the personal touch. When customers discuss new projects, they know that they are speaking to the machine operator, who is also the business owner.
Materials cut are typically aluminium, brass, copper and stainless steel, but sometimes exotics such as tantalum, Inconel and molybdenum are required for specific projects.
The choice of Hurco machine tools was made based on a positive, previous experience that has continued to this day. According to Wayne Robins “Hurco are very responsive, either by email or when we call. There will always be someone at the end of the phone who will talk us through what we can fix ourselves. They have always been super-reliable and often have an engineer here the following day”. He adds “They have not let us down and that’s why we keep coming back”.
On-time, quality products are the speciality of Atomic Precision. Often high-accuracy and using very small tools, down to 200 microns. Confidence in their machines and also their own ability, means that they are able to take on work that some subcontractors might avoid.
In addition to the 3 axis VM10 and VM20 machines, they now have 2 VM10Ui, 5 axis machines, one of which is a brand new arrival. To complement the 5-axis capacity they have a VMX30Ti, with a Kitagawa 5AX-TT150 rotary-tilt table. It offers similar 5 axis machining capability, but is configured to manage longer, thinner components. This is a result of the larger Z travel available on the VMX compared to the VM range.
Whilst much of the work is programmed using HyperMill CADCAM software, Atomic are able to take full advantage of the simplified tool and part-set-up that is standard on the Hurco Max 5 control. Furthermore, the twin-screen high-resolution display shows a clear representation of the component and toolpath, giving confidence to the operator when running a simulation of the programme, prior to cutting the first part.
Mike Phillips gives the example of a new employee with no previous CNC experience, who was able to set-up and run jobs after 2 days on the Hurco training course. The benefit is that Mike and Wayne are now freed-up to get on with other work, helping to keep lead-times to a minimum.
