Yesterday, I rose in the Senate to speak in support of Bill S-242, Georgina’s Law, and to call for a truly national and evidence-based response to intimate partner violence.
For decades, survivors and families have shown extraordinary courage in sharing their stories. They have told us, again and again, that violence persists not because we lack awareness, but because we lack the political will to confront the misogyny, racism, colonialism, and poverty that allow it to continue.
Too many women, especially First Nations, Métis, Inuit, Black, racialized, disabled, and poor women, are still left without protection or support. They are too often blamed for the very violence they are forced to survive. Their stories, including those of Georgina, Tona, Carol, “S,” and “L,” reveal the real costs of inaction and the profound failures of the systems that should keep them safe.
Georgina’s Law creates an opportunity to move beyond piecemeal and punitive approaches. It encourages coordinated accountability that is rooted in prevention, substantive equality, and human rights.
Ending violence against women requires more than ribbons, anniversaries, and statements. It demands dismantling the structures that permit this violence and ensuring that every woman has access to safety, housing, economic security, and justice.
We owe it to survivors, and to future generations, to act with courage, compassion, and urgency.
