Carol Montgomery, Physical Therapist and Integral Human Gait(TM) expert, guides you through a somatic movement experience to discover the connection between the torso, arms, and legs, accessing the torso's powerful impact on energy-efficient walking.
Vertical Crawling on the Back restores middle back (thoracic spine) and rib mobility; relieves the overworked and compressed low back (lumbar spine); improves balance and the ability to stand on one leg that can lead to easy and muscular-efficient walking. The exploration takes place lying on your back, either on the floor or in a bed, to maximize sensations of movement options without using a tremendous amount of musculoskeletal energy. This position also allows accessibility of whole-body movements despite most orthopedic or neurological conditions, restoring healthy gait patterns.
During walking, the torso's ability to transfer energy from the lower body to the upper body restores healthy gait patterns through whole-body movement integration. In this video, you can feel how the foot pushing into the ground signals the brain to 'push' or change the location of your Center of Mass and causes the musculoskeletal system to side-bend the torso and initiate a spinal vertebral movement as if you are walking upright.
Instructional videos in the Gait for Human Potential series use Integral Human Gait(TM) concepts to restore healthy gait patterns through whole-body movement integration. A healthy gait is critical for easy walking, maintaining balance, and healing debilitating low back and neck pain.
Integral Human Gait(TM) theory by Carol Montgomery and Cynthia Allen is foundational in online and in-person workshops at Integrative Learning Center.
