Playthrough of Titus' 1988 racing game for the Amiga, Crazy Cars.
Developed by Titus Interactive, it was one of the early racing games on the Amiga and set the stage for later titles in the series. The game focuses on speed and skillful driving as you navigate winding roads, avoid traffic, and try to reach each destination within the time limit. It involves racing through six challenges, each with a 95-second time limit, to unlock four increasingly "crazy" cars.
Graphically, aside from a poorly scanned but impressive-for-1988 image of a Ferrari, the game is rather standard. The scenery, while not artistically sophisticated, is colorful and varies between levels. The cars, viewed only from behind, are well-drawn, although there are only four types. The game does feature a decent end screen, for those who manage to reach it. The audio consists of a repetitive engine sample used for all four cars (though with different gear ratios).
Unfortunately, the AI is not good, randomly swerving across the road and causing frustrating chain reactions of collisions that severely hamper the player’s speed. Despite these issues, Crazy Cars does offer a decent sense of speed, with road bumps that can launch the car into the air. In conclusion, Crazy Cars is a flawed game, plagued by dodgy AI, frustrating gameplay, and simplistic presentation.
