Initially the way the flexural formula is obtained is briefly mentioned. The fact that it is for loading on the axis of symmetry is emphasized, and the way the equation is used for more general cases is discussed. Thus an overview is given.
In order to obtain the equation we determine the variation of strain on a section perpendicular to the centroidal axis using heuristic arguments. We first show that in pure bending a beam would assume the form of an arc of a circle and that plane sections remain plane. The variation of strain, initially with radius and then with the y-ordinate is obtained.
