Whole Masoor Dal Curry recipe - Red Lentils Curry Recipe! Whole Masoor Dal Curry is a hearty and flavorful dish made with whole red lentils, simmered in a spiced tomato-onion gravy, and finished with aromatic tempering. This protein-rich, vegan-friendly curry pairs perfectly with rice or roti for a comforting and nutritious meal!
Ingredients (Serves 2-3)
For Cooking Lentils:
½ cup dried Whole red lentils/whole masoor dal/sabut masoor dal (rinsed, no need to soak)
1.5 cups water
¼ tsp turmeric
½ tsp salt
For the Curry Base:
1 tbsp oil or ghee
¼ tsp mustard seeds
¼ tsp cumin seeds
1 dry red chili
Pinch of asafoetida (hing)
3-4 curry leaves
½ small onion, finely chopped
1 small tomato, diced
1/2 in ginger- finely chopped
1-2 garlic cloves - finely chopped
1 green chili, slit
¼ tsp turmeric
½ tsp coriander powder
½ tsp cumin powder (optional)
¼ tsp garam masala
Salt to taste
Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Rinse the lentils very well. Transfer to the pressure cooker.
Add water+turmeric + salt
Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles on medium heat.
Open once the pressure released naturally
Heat oil/ghee in a pan. Add mustard seeds and allow to crackled.
Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
Add red chili, hing, and curry leaves.
Add onion and sauté until translucent , it takes about 1 minutes.
Stir in chopped ginger-garlic and green chili, sauté for 30 sec.
Add tomato and cook until soft, it takes about 3 minutes.
Add turmeric, coriander powder, cumin powder, red chili powder, and garam masala. Mix well.
Add cooked lentils+salt and 1/2-1 cup water (if too thick).
Mix well. Bring them to a boil. Simmer 5 mins on low heat.
Top with cilantro.
Enjoy with rice, chapathi, roti, quinoa etc
