This video explores the Tomb of Esther and Mordechai in Hamedan, one of the most prominent historical and cultural landmarks related to Jewish heritage in Iran. Located in one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, this site represents a unique layer of Hamedan’s religious and historical identity.
The right-hand tomb belongs to Mordechai and the left-hand tomb belongs to Esther. The intricately carved wooden chests placed over the tombs were crafted by a benefactor named Enayatollah Tuiserkani. The dome above the sanctuary is built in three nested layers, designed to protect the structure against earthquakes.
For many generations, Jewish families in Iran visited this place especially during the festival of Purim, when the Scroll of Esther is read. The tradition of local visitation, remembrance, and prayer has contributed to the cultural richness of Hamedan’s historic atmosphere. According to the site’s administrator, this is considered the second most significant place of pilgrimage for the Jewish community after Jerusalem.
An inscription at the site is written in Aramaic, the oldest ancient script in the world, and reads: treat your neighbors with kindness. On the rooftop of the synagogue, symbolic elements such as the Stars of Prophet David highlight the spiritual character of the complex, while in the courtyard there is a place where candles are lit by visitors in connection with personal wishes and expressions of gratitude.
Historical references to this location appear in medieval travel literature, including the 12th-century writings of Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela. Later historical accounts describe Hebrew inscriptions, ritual practices, and continued preservation of cultural memory across centuries.
In more recent times, restoration and preservation efforts strengthened the architectural condition of the site and added symbolic elements that enhanced its visual and spiritual atmosphere. The quiet courtyard, old stones, and modest prayer space reflect a deep continuity of local memory within the broader history of Hamedan.
Today, the Tomb of Esther and Mordechai remains not only a place of religious reverence but also a historical attraction visited by travelers, researchers, and locals interested in the multicultural heritage of the city. The site reminds us of the diverse communities that have shaped Hamedan over time and highlights the long-standing coexistence of cultures and faiths in this part of Iran.
I hope this video offers a respectful and authentic look at one of Hamedan’s most meaningful historic locations, allowing viewers to experience its peaceful atmosphere, architectural details, and enduring cultural echoes.
