This is my second competition match — no-gi, white belt, and very much a work in progress.
Years later, I’m watching it again with a different set of eyes.
In this video, I break down what I thought was happening during the match, what was actually happening mechanically, and where my decision-making didn’t yet match reality. There’s no highlight reel here — just an honest look at early mistakes, misplaced confidence, and the learning process that follows.
I’m a black belt instructor at 47 BJJ Co-op in Brooklyn, where we focus on jiu-jitsu as a long-term practice rather than a performance. This breakdown is for anyone who’s curious about competition, nervous about starting, or interested in how understanding develops over time.
If you’re new to jiu-jitsu, or if you’ve ever wondered whether you’re “doing it wrong,” you’re probably in good company.
