Last week I told you that heavy snow in Hamburg is rare. Then winter decided to prove me very wrong.
Filmed on January 9th, 2026.
In this video, I walk through Hamburg’s city center during extreme winter conditions and an active severe weather warning. Train services are completely interrupted, public transport has almost come to a standstill, and places that are normally packed on a Friday afternoon — like Mönckebergstraße, Jungfernstieg, and Gänsemarkt — are suddenly quiet and almost empty.
German weather services are warning of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and dangerous conditions, advising people to stay at home. So of course, I got curious and went out to document what Hamburg looks like when the city hits pause.
This is not a travel guide. It’s a moment in time.
