Peak Fall Colors on a Quiet Colorado Mountain Road

Today’s journey takes us on a relaxing POV drive through Little Cimarron in southwest Colorado, exploring some of the region’s most scenic and lesser-known backroads during peak fall color.

This drive begins east of Cimarron, Colorado, just off Highway 50, where we turn onto Little Cimarron Road. From there, we follow this quiet mountain route as it transitions into Forest Road 864, traveling through the eastern portion of the Uncompahgre National Forest. The road leads to a turnaround and hiking trailhead, where we pause before retracing our path and ending the journey near the High Mesa turn-off.

Along the way, you’ll experience a real-time passenger seat POV, designed to let you relax and take in the scenery as it naturally unfolds. Fall colors are at their peak along this route, with vibrant aspen groves, mountain landscapes, and peaceful forest roads lining the drive. During the journey, we also stop briefly to observe a Dusky Grouse feeding alongside the road.

This scenic backroad drive passes through a wide range of landscapes, beginning in open ranchland, then transitioning into sagebrush and scrub oak habitat. As elevation increases, golden aspens appear before giving way to alpine forest within the national forest.

Please note that much of this road is not open year-round. During periods of heavy rain or snowmelt, AWD or 4x4 vehicles are recommended. This drive was recorded in a 2024 Toyota 4Runner, well-suited for exploring rugged mountain roads and quiet backcountry routes.
