Little Island and Pier 57 are two notable structures along Manhattan's Hudson River waterfront, each with a rich history and modern transformation.

Little Island, opened in 2021, sits on the site of the former Pier 54, which played a significant role in maritime history. Pier 54 was once a bustling dock for ocean liners, including the ill-fated Lusitania. After Hurricane Sandy damaged the pier in 2012, it was reimagined as Little Island, a 2.4-acre public park designed by Thomas Heatherwick and funded by by the Diller-von Furstenberg Family Foundation, which contributed $260 million to the initiative The park features unique "tulip" shaped concrete supports, diverse plantings, and performance spaces.

Pier 57, located just north of Little Island, has its own storied past. Built in 1954, it served various purposes, including a bus depot for the New York City Transit Authority. After years of disuse, Pier 57 underwent extensive renovations and now houses Google offices. In April 2023, it opened to the public, offering additional park space and amenities. Today, both structures contribute to the revitalization of New York City's waterfront, providing innovative public spaces for recreation, culture, and community gatherings
