Roxanne’s Bariatric Surgery Success Losing 81 lbs with The Sleeve Clinic

What fears did you have going in?
“The fear isn't that it might not work, the fear is that I'm not going to be able to gorge again. That's the fear because that's what we want to do. That's how we got here. But as soon as you get through the healing phase, you realize you can still eat.”

What was your surgical experience like?
“The difficult part for me was around day three to five. After that hump, I had zero nausea, and zero pain. I've never eaten so much that I had discomfort, so it was smooth sailing.”

What do you see looking at this old photo?
“That person went through a lot in life, bearing children, yoyoing dieting, low self-esteem. So I have a lot of love and respect for that person. Low self-esteem was my biggest issue for sure. I was carrying all that weight, and my poor heart, my joints, no wonder they were hurting. I thought I looked good back then.”

How has your life changed since having a gastric sleeve?
“My body hurt before. I work with seniors, so every day I would see ladies in their nineties coming in with their walkers all spry, and I thought, oh my gosh I can’t even stand up without pain. I couldn't sit on the floor cross-legged with my grandchildren. Now I can go for long walks without hurting. The quality of my life has changed. I was always sluggish and tired no matter what I did and now I'm always ready to go.”

What does it feel like to have a gastric sleeve?
“The only time I feel the sleeve now is when I'm in tune, when I'm eating something. It tells me when I'm done and it doesn't hurt. It's just kind of a reminder that, okay, the sleeve is full. I go out for dinner and eat everything and anything. I am not addicted to food anymore that way, so I don't have the desire to go taste that cookie in the cupboard. It was almost like a system reset.”

What has the aftercare been like?
“I do think it's really important whether it's the questionnaires, meeting with Sulana, and talking about food difficulties. When you first hear that five-year thing, you think, what if that's not true? Because most people promise things, but Sleeve delivered.”

What advice do you have for people considering a sleeve?
“Don’t wait. What are you waiting for? For more weight, for more pain, for more health issues? Tomorrow is not promised. I've spent a year and two months now feeling younger than I did when I was younger. Had I done it earlier in my life, I wouldn't have done so much damage to my body.”
