In this episode, I’m joined by Coronado Swim Team Elite (CSTE) Head Coach Sam Hoekstra. Appointed as head coach in August, Sam discusses his journey to CSTE — from elite athlete to accomplished coach — and what he learned along the way. He also shares insights from his viral “100 Days of 50s” race challenge, which captured attention across the swimming community.
Before joining CSTE, Sam served as Associate Head Coach at The Race Club under Olympic legend Gary Hall Sr., where he worked closely with world-class swimmers focused on technical precision and peak performance.
Since 2013, he’s led several successful programs across Michigan — including Byron Center High School, Byron Center Aquatics, and West Ottawa Swim Club — and has served as an Elite Clinician with the Fitter & Faster Swim Tour.
As an athlete, Sam was an NCAA All-American at the University of Louisville and also competed for the University of Michigan, setting relay records and racing at the highest levels of collegiate swimming.
