Most people, when they hear the words 'the three musketeers' immediately think of Cardiff Morris but a few people's first thought is of the 1973 film of the same name. The film was written by George MacDonald Fraser (don't worry, Alexandre Dumas got co-writing credits, but no royalties). You may recognise the name, it is the same George MacDonald Fraser responsible for writing the historical comical (but neither pastoral nor tragical) Flashman series of novels.
It was directed by Richard Lester who had already directed 'A Hard Day's Night' and 'Help!' and was a favourite of John Lennon's. The film was made in the 70s but it had been floating around as an idea since the early 60s. Richard Lester had been connected with the film for most of this time. Why? Because, originally, the film was proposed to be a vehicle for... The Beatles.
