Méduse was a French Navy Pallas-class frigate of 40 guns that was launched in 1810. Following the Bourbon Restoration in 1816, Méduse was armed en flûte to transport French officials to the harbour of Saint-Louis, Senegal, to formally re-establish French possession of the colony under the conditions of the First Peace of Paris. Méduse was lost after colliding with the Bank of Arguin off the coast of modern-day Mauritania due to incompetent navigation by her commander, Chaumareys. The majority of the 400 people on board were evacuated, leaving 151 men to seek safety on a makeshift raft pulled by the frigate's launches. However, the towing proved problematic, and the boats eventually abandoned the raft and its people in the middle of the ocean.
