Indonesia faces many challenges in its bid to be self-sufficient in food production. Commercial farming currently focuses on a few high-value and high-yielding crops, limiting the variety of food available in the market. A smart farming start-up hopes to change this by using its agricultural expertise and technology to improve the yields and productivity of local farmers, thus improving their livelihoods.
Indonesia is also working towards transforming its agri-food system by adopting a digitalisation strategy. It is collaborating with the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organisation towards that goal. The strategy aims to harness data and information resources in agriculture for the benefit of smallholders. Efforts are also being made for farmers to shift from non-organic to more environmentally friendly fertilisers.
