The 'Bf109' is actually a Spanish licence built post war version of the Messerschmitt Bf109. These aircraft were built by Hispano Aviation and designated HA-1112M1L and called 'Buchon' . The Buchon is powered by a two-speed Rolls Royce Merlin 500-45 engine, as Germany was unable to supply the Spanish with any suitable engines, let alone the correct Daimler Benz for the Bf109. Hence the aircrafts different frontal appearance to that of the German built Messerschmitt Bf109.
This aircraft served with Ala 7 of the Spanish Air Force at Tablada and El Corpero. It was one of 27 purchased at auction from the Spanish Air Force by Spitfire Productions for use in the making of the 1968 film “Battle of Britain”.
Registered as G-AWHK, it was one of 11 aircraft taken by Texan pilot and aircraft collector Wilson C “Connie” Edwards, as payment for his flying services during the filming. The aircraft was acquired by the Old Flying Machine Company, arriving at Duxford In May 1996, re-registered as G-BWUE and sold on to The Real Aircraft Company at Breighton in Yorkshire.
Purchased by Spitfire Ltd. in November 2006, G-BWUE moved back to Duxford to be maintained by the Aircraft Restoration Company and was then sold to Historic Flying Ltd in November 2009 who held the aircraft until 2019.
Since December 2019 it has been owned by Propshop Ltd (Aircraft Restoration Company) and is again registered as G-AWHK. It currently wears temporary 1 Group, Jagdgeschwader 27 (1.JG27) 'Afrika', North African WW2 1941/2 desert markings for the filming of the six-part BBC mini-series, 'SAS: Rogue Heroes', which was aired in 2022.
