In 1985, BRT (now VRT) asked Frédéric Devreese to compose a song for Mireille Capelle to sing at the Eurovision Song Contest. He then asked Hugo Claus to write the lyrics for the song, which he named "Vannacht". However, BRT commissioned other writers to write lyrics for the composition, including Bert Vivier whose lyrics, "Ik was een kind", they preferred. Devreese and Capelle stood by Claus' lyrics and did not want to use Vivier's lyrics, but the BRT would not let them. Eventually, Devreese and Capelle withdrew their participation and BRT was left with only a few days to find a new entry, which ended up being "Laat me nu gaan".
"Vannacht" was never released and was never sung by Mireille Capelle. However, when Hugo Claus was writing and directing his 1989 film, 'Het Sacrament', he asked Frédéric Devreese to write the score, which included the music for "Vannacht". This is the segment of 'Het Sacrament' where "Vannacht" was used.
