Trauma-informed ministry raises a simple question about discipleship:
What changes—and what doesn’t?
How do we care for trauma survivors in a way that strengthens discipleship—without compromising the gospel or the call of Jesus to follow Him?
In this video, I explain how trauma can shape a person’s experience of authority, threat, safety, and closeness—and why that affects how we disciple, even though it does not change the gospel, the goal of discipleship, or the call to follow Jesus.
We’ll talk through two important distinctions for shepherding wisely:
• Capacity vs. desire
• Struggle vs. rebellion
And we’ll look at four things trauma-informed discipleship should actively cultivate:
• Agency
• Regulation
• Truth without shame
• Hope that can tolerate delay
Trauma-informed discipleship doesn’t ask less of people.
It asks us to shepherd people with wisdom, understanding, and compassion.
