Kargil is a city in Indian-administered Ladakh in the disputed Kashmir region. It is the joint capital of Ladakh, an Indian-administered union territory. It is also the headquarters of the Kargil district. It is the second-largest urban centre in Ladakh after Leh. Kargil is located 204 kilometres east of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, and 234 kilometres to the west of Leh. It is on the bank of the Suru River near its confluence with the Wakha Rong river, the latter providing the most accessible route to Leh.

Dras is often called "The Gateway to Ladakh". It is at a height of 10,800 feet (3,300 m). Dras is 140 km from Srinagar and 63 km from Sonmarg. It is a town and hill station in Kargil district of the union territory of Ladakh in India. It is on the NH 1 between Zoji La pass and Kargil town. Traditionally, Dras is known as Hem-babs, which means "snow land"; the word "Hem" means snow. The average temperature of Dras in winter is −20 °C.

Fotu La or Fatu La is a mountain pass on the Srinagar-Leh highway in the Zanskar Range of the Himalayas in India. At an elevation of 4,108 meters (13,478 ft), it is the highest point on the highway, surpassing the famed Zoji La. Fotu La is one of two high mountain passes between Leh and Kargil, the other being Namika La.
Moving eastwards, the highway begins to descend towards the Lamayuru after Fotu La. There is a Prasar Bharati television relay station serving Lamayuru located on the pass.

Zoji La (sometimes Zojila Pass) is a high mountain pass in the Himalayas. It is located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir and the Kargil district of Ladakh, both union territories of India. This pass connects the Kashmir Valley to its west with the Dras and Suru valleys to its northeast and the Indus valley further east. NH 1 between Srinagar and Leh in the western section of the Himalayan mountain range, traverses the pass.
According to some sources, Zoji La means the "mountain pass of blizzards". The word for blizzards, however, based on oral tradition that survived among the local people, Zoji refers to Du-Zhi-la, the goddess of Tibet’s four seasons.

Must Know Before You Travel to Ladakh-
Roads to Leh-Ladakh are closed from November to mid-May due to heavy snowfall.
Permits for Indians: No Inner Line Permit (ILP) needed (as of August 2021). Foreigners: Must get a Protected Area Permit (PAP) or Restricted Area Permit (RAP) from the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, Leh.
Environmental Fees: Green Fee: ₹400, Wildlife Protection Fee: ₹20/day, Red Cross Fund: ₹100 Payable online or via hotels/travel agents.
Vehicle Permit: No permit required for Ladakh itself.
Plastic-Free Zone: Avoid using or carrying single-use plastics.
Cash & ATMs: ATMs are only available in Leh and may not always work. Carry sufficient cash.
Acclimatization: If arriving by air, rest in Leh for at least 24 hours to prevent altitude sickness. Start Diamox (Medicine for Altitude Sickness) 1–2 days before the trip (consult your doctor beforehand).
No Inner Line Permit needed for Leh–Manali or Leh–Srinagar routes, but Ecology Contribution Fund fee applies.
Use deeply hydrating moisturizer and high-SPF sunscreen daily to combat dryness and sunburn.
Carry a puffer jacket with fleece lining, thermal innerwear, gloves, and warm socks. Layering is key.
Only postpaid Airtel and JIO SIMs work in many areas. Prepaid SIMs do not work in Ladakh.
