The Bangwato Tribe was born after a conflict between Ngwato and his elder brother Kwena Morulaoesi near the Ngotwane River which forced Ngwato to ran away northward of the now Botswana. Kwena commanded a regiment to follow, capture and bring Ngwato. After a while running from the Bakwena regiment Ngwato saw a thick bush and decided to hide in it. The regiments noise awoke a duiker that had all along been asleep when Ngwato hid in the bush earlier. Upon hearing their noise, the duiker escaped from its hideout and ran away, the Bakwena regiment chased after the Duiker thinking it was Ngwato only to realize later that could not have been him. Ngwato then later searched for his followers and shared the story of how Duiker saved his life and they then decided from that day that they and their decedents would treat Duiker as a sacred animal
