Addiction is a chronic, relapsing brain disorder driven by genetic vulnerability, developmental timing (notably adolescence), and environmental stressors. Repeated supraphysiologic dopamine surges from substances (or certain behaviors) produce durable neuroplastic changes (D2 downregulation, DeltaFosB, synaptic remodeling) that shift behavior from goal-directed to compulsive. Early intervention, multimodal treatment (psychosocial + pharmacotherapy), harm reduction, and stigma reduction are central priorities. Emerging tools—pharmacogenomics, immunotherapies, and novel drug classes—offer promising directions but require more evidence.
