The Upanishads address fundamental aspects of human existence and explore themes that remain timeless, as people today still search for answers to these questions. However, if we were to distill all the teachings of the Upanishads into one core message, what would it be? What is the single, essential insight from the Upanishads that everyone should be aware of?
In this video, Sri Sathya Sai Answers these questions...

In the context of humans who are lost in worldly ignorance, we have the call of the Upanishads, “Arise, Awake, and stop not until the goal is reached.” You have to emerge from the darkness of ignorance, be awake, and always remember your sacred Divine nature.
Now, here we pride ourselves on being devotees. But all our views are externally oriented.
Wherever you see, there is only Divinity and nothing else.
This is a piece of paper.
In this paper, you have matter printed on it.
What is depicted in this figure is a frog catching an insect.
To devour this frog, a snake stealthily makes its way.
A peacock is on its way to catch the snake.
A hunter is aiming at the peacock to hunt it.
The frog believes that it is eating up the fly.
It is not aware that the snake is on its way to catch the frog.
Similarly, the snake does not know that the peacock is coming to eat it.
The peacock thinks it is eating the snake.
The peacock also does not know that the hunter is waiting to hit his aim.
Here, one is waiting to gulp down the other.
In this manner, we are also making efforts to target others.
In this paper, we have the bee, the frog, the snake, the peacock, and the hunter.
But, when we look at it, is there a fly or an insect here? No.
Is there a frog here? No.
Is there a snake here? No, it is not there.
Is the peacock here? No, it is not there.
Is the hunter here? No.
All that is there over here is a piece of paper.
All that you see are photos of these things.
All the figures in this description have the paper as the basis.
Now, as long as you see the figures, you do not see the paper.
The moment you see the paper, these figures disappear.
In the same manner, the entire world is seen on the paper called Divinity.
You are seeing the world around you, so you are not able to see the paper or God.
The world has as its support, God. Like these figures have the paper. Look at the paper of God, the world disappears.
Samartha Ramdas says in this context “This world, this creation is nothing but illusion, imagination. The name of the Lord Rama alone is truth. So the piece of paper here is the truth.”
See these forms and figures etched on these pillars made of stones. The pillars are of stones, the figures are of stones, and everything that you identify here with the figure is stone such as the face, nose, and head, and every part is made up of stone. So, here you find everything, stone is nothing but Brahman.
If you have a small idol of Krishna made of silver, and if you look at Krishna closely, the hands of Krishna are silver, the face of Krishna is silver, eyes, nails, ears, and everything that you identify with Krishna idol is silver.
When you are looking at the form, you can distinguish between the eyes, ears, hands, and so on. But if you concentrate on the silver, all the aspects of the form like the nose and ears will disappear and you can see only the silver.
In the same manner, so long as your view is outward, you will identify with the world. The moment you turn inwards, everything becomes Godly and you will identify the entire world as Vishnu.
Because we think of mine and thine, this duality is creating fear.
Where you have this feeling of yours and mine, there is an element of fear.
When you realise that everything is One (Divine), there is no place for fear.
The One manifests as many. Everything has originated from the One.
There is only One, not two.
It is this doctrine of ‘Tat Twam Asi’ – ‘Thou Art That’, that we must recognise.
Once you realise this, you are liberated.
