The Interior States Abandoned Mine Land Reclamation Award was honored to DNR Reclamation’s AML program. The winning South Lake Highwall Project restored more than 81 acres through the elimination of 3,550 feet of dangerous highwalls, grading of spoil slopes, and treatment of multiple acid seeps.
Through the combined work of DNR’s AML program, the Division of Forestry, and Jefferson Township, the project improved safety, reduced environmental hazards, expanded recreation access, and strengthened habitat and ecological services.
