Engineering geologists are faced with a broad range of variable soil and rock properties which impact projects. Strength, in terms of bearing value and shear strength, is critical. Moisture contents, porosity and permeability, affect the role that water plays in soil and rock properties. Structure, in terms of fractures and joints and bedding planes, play a part in rock mass strength, and stability of slopes. Cementation can improve rock and soil density and strength. We use rock in different ways: as road beds, as sculpture, as wall and walkway materials, as seashore protection, and in many other ways. NOTE: UCS is an abbreviation for Uniaxial Compressive Strength, not Uniform Classification System, as mentioned in my presentation.
