The Sahastra Bahu Temples / Saas-Bahu Temples
The Sahastra Bahu Temples, commonly known as the Saas-Bahu Temples, are a pair of intricately carved Hindu temples located in Nagda, Rajasthan, approximately 23 km from Udaipur. Dating back to the late 10th or early 11th century, these temples are dedicated to Virabhadra, a fierce form of Lord Shiva. The name ‘Sahasra Bahu’ translates to ‘One with a thousand arms,’ referring to Lord Vishnu, but over time, the name evolved to ‘Saas-Bahu,’ symbolizing the mother-in-law (saas) and daughter-in-law (bahu) duo, reflecting the dual temple structure.
Historical Background
Commissioned by King Mahipala of the Kachchhwaha Dynasty, the larger temple was built for his wife, a devotee of Lord Vishnu, while the smaller adjacent temple was constructed for his daughter-in-law, a devotee of Lord Shiva. This unique familial dedication led to the colloquial naming of the temples as Saas-Bahu.
Architectural Highlights
• Style: The temples exhibit the Māru-Gurjara architectural style, characterized by intricate carvings and detailed sculptures.
• Structure: Both temples share a common platform and feature sanctuaries, mandapas (pillared halls), and open porches. The larger temple is surrounded by ten subsidiary shrines, while the smaller has four.
• Carvings: The interiors and parts of the exteriors are adorned with elaborate carvings depicting various deities and mythological scenes.
