This is a recording of my newly acquired 1800s Astor Chamber Barrel Organ. This instrument was made before some of the great composers of the 19th century such as Johann Strauss II as he wasn't born yet when this organ was made! This organ I won at an auction that took place in Michigan a few weeks ago. This instrument was once in the Lake Lure Inn in Lake Lure North Carolina. They had a mechanical music collection which included the rare Imhof and Mukle orchestrion which also sold in this auction along with this Astor I bought. It seems Lake Lure Inn liquidated their entire collection for some reason and this auction was the result. It is possible they liquidated to save these instruments from the bad weather tendencies down there following two really bad hurricanes last Fall.
With this new Astor (which I now own three including the one under restoration), there were a few issues from transport from the auction that caused dead notes. I however had the fix for this as it was a simple adjustment as something with the keyframe was out of alignment and now it plays about 90% since the repairs I made. I also just today made an additional adjustment to the keyframe height that made it very nicely play this alternative barrel of unknown songs!
