Step-by-Step: Mixing Grain Spawn into Master's Mix in a Unicorn Bag
1. Sanitize Your Workspace 🧴🧤
Work in a clean environment, preferably near a laminar flow hood or still air box (SAB).
Wear gloves and sanitize them with isopropyl alcohol to reduce contamination risk.
2. Prepare the Unicorn Bag 🛍️
Carefully unfold your Master's Mix bags and open them, so they’re ready to pour the grain spawn in.
3. Add the Grain Spawn 🌾➕🛍️
Break up the colonized grain spawn by massaging the bag or shaking the jar to ensure even distribution.
Carefully open the grain spawn bag or jar and pour the spawn into the Unicorn bag with the substrate.
Target Ratio: Use a 1:5 spawn-to-substrate ratio (e.g., 1 lb grain spawn to 5 lbs Master's Mix).
4. Mix Thoroughly 🌀🤲
Gently mix the grain spawn and substrate by massaging the outside of the bag.
Ensure the grain spawn is evenly distributed throughout the Master's Mix.
5. Seal the Bag 🔒✂️
Once mixed, seal the bag completely using an impulse sealer.
6. Form the Block 🧱
Firmly press your mixture into a nice, compacted block.
7. Incubation/Colonization 🌡️🕰️
Place the sealed bag in a clean, dark, warm environment:
Temperature: 70-75°F.
Time: 7-14 days or until the substrate is fully colonized (mycelium will appear white and even throughout).
Avoid handling or shaking the bag excessively during this phase.
8. Check for Full Colonization ✅🍄🟫
Once the substrate is fully white and colonized, it is ready for fruiting conditions.
