Our Son Tried Surfing Lakey Peak… And It Didn’t Go As Planned

Today we ride our scooters across West Sumbawa with one goal: finally reaching Lakey Peak — one of Indonesia’s most iconic surf breaks. Even though we’re not surfers, we wanted to see whether this part of Sumbawa is still worth visiting for families and adventure-seekers like us.

The road to Lakey Peak surprised us with epic views, drone-worthy coastlines, and tiny villages that made the journey feel like its own adventure. Once we arrived, we found a hotel with an unbelievable view of the main break — surfers carving lines just outside our window.

Our teenage son Jesse decided it was time to give surfing a shot. His first wave? He stood up. But Lakey Peak had other plans… set after set hit him before he could even reach his board. It was humbling, scary, and a reminder that travel isn’t always postcard-perfect.
