Rising along historic Downing Street, Bangunan Tuanku Syed Putra holds a special place in Penang’s post-independence story. Completed in 1962, this 10-storey landmark was the first major government building constructed in Penang after Malaysia’s independence, named in honour of Tuanku Syed Putra, the Raja of Perlis and the nation’s third Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Built on the site of a former Japanese godown, it was designed in the sleek International architectural style of the era and officially opened by Raja Tun Uda, Penang’s first Governor. Today, it remains best known as the home of the Penang General Post Office, alongside various federal and state departments, a living reminder of the island’s journey into modern nationhood.
