Bijli Mahadev Temple, perched atop Mathan Hill in the Kullu Valley of Himachal Pradesh, is a revered shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,460 meters, the temple offers panoramic views of the Kullu and Parvati valleys, making it both a spiritual haven and a trekker’s delight.
🛕 Introduction & Significance
The name “Bijli Mahadev” translates to “Lightning Shiva,” rooted in a fascinating legend. According to local lore, the temple’s Shiva Lingam is struck by lightning every 12 years, shattering it into pieces. Priests then restore the Lingam using a mixture of butter and sattu, symbolizing the cycle of destruction and renewal . This phenomenon is believed to be a divine act by Lord Shiva to protect the valley from evil forces.
Architecturally, the temple is constructed in the traditional Kath-Kuni style, utilizing wood and stone, which is characteristic of Himachali design. A prominent 60-foot tall wooden staff stands in front of the temple, believed to attract the divine lightning .
