A Closer Look: Old master drawings in the Achenbach collection

Renowned for its superb print holdings, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts is also the repository of an important collection of European old master drawings, dating from the 15th to the 19th century. These drawings were gifted in 1948 to the City of San Francisco by local collectors Moore and Hazel Achenbach. Delving deep into this lesser-known collection through the lenses of modern connoisseurship, this lecture will highlight recent research on a group of Renaissance and Baroque Italian drawings. Learn about new attributions as well as these drawings’ functions, techniques, and earliest collecting history.

About the curator
Furio Rinaldi, PhD, is curator in charge of drawings, prints, and photographs at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where he has organized the exhibitions Tamara de Lempicka (2024–2025), Botticelli Drawings (2023–2024) and Color into Line: Pastels from the Renaissance to the Present (2021–2022). In 2022, he was appointed the David and Julie Tobey Fellow at I Tatti — The Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies.
