What is the Rio Grande Plan?

The Rio Grande Depot in downtown Salt Lake City was once one of the finest train stations in the west. After the last train left in 1999, the tracks were pulled up, in favor of a new intermodal hub a block and a half to the west. The Rio Grande Plan proposes a way to return rail service to the Rio Grande Depot, which would become the new central transit hub for Salt Lake City. Benefits include the restoration of the historic depot, the permanent closure of 4 and a half railroad crossings in the downtown area, the opening of 50 acres of industrial land for new urban development, and the reuniting of communities that had been divided by railroad yards for over a century.
